Paris Photo LA takes place this weekend at Paramount Studios. I attended the preview on Friday and was quite simply, blown away. Some of the finest fine art photography in the world is on display (and available for purchase). Take a look at some of my favorite discoveries.
Hendrick Kerstens, is a photographer I first thought I learned about in the New York Times. In actuality, I was remembering Nina Katchadourian whose self- portraits taken in airplane bathrooms served to quell her boredom. You can see why I was confused – both are reminiscent of classic Dutch portraiture, but the light in Kerstens’ images is breathtaking. Both artists use found objects to emulate historical period costumes – note the paper doilies, expanded paper tubes and napkin on the head Kersten’s muse (and daughter).
A new discovery at Paris Photo for me was Trine Sonderrgaarde. Her images of long abandoned architectural spaces were hauntingly beautiful. Patina and architecture converge with painterly Hopper-like light to depict spaces I want to inhabit. The subtle shifts of colors seem as if you’ve stepped directly into a vacated Farrow and Ball color catalog.
Don’t miss this opportunity for a cultural re-charge and take a break from the galleries to browse the New York city street bookstores and sample the fare offered by the food trucks.
